FAQ about Confirmation

 FAQ about Confirmation

Here are some FAQ about Confirmation…

Most of these answers come from the Baltimore Catechism and the Catechism of the Catholic Church

1.     What is confirmation?

Confirmation is a sacrament through which we receive the Holy Ghost to make us strong and perfect Christians and soldiers of Jesus Christ.

2.     Is Confirmation mentioned in the Bible?

"Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit" (Acts 8:14-17).

3.     How is connected to Baptism?

In baptism we are made Christians, but we are not very strong until we receive the Holy Spirit in Confirmation. The Apostles were very fearful, hiding out, until the Holy Spirit came to them at Pentecost. Then they went out to preach the Gospel  boldly, and suffered martyrdom bravely.

Both Baptism and Confirmation imprint an indelible, spiritual mark, which is the sign of Jesus Christ (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church para 1304). Confirmation is like a completion of Baptism.

4.     How is connected to Eucharist?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church Para 1285 states that Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation together constitute what are know as the "Sacrament of Christian Initiation." These Sacraments are necessary for saving grace.

5.    What are the Gifts and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit?

From the Sacred Scriptures, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit:

"And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of godliness [piety]. And he shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord, He shall not judge according to the sight of the eyes, nor reprove according to the hearing of the ears." Isaiah 11:2-3

From the Sacred Scriptures, the fruits of the Holy Spirit:

"  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. " Galatians 5:22-23

6.    What are the effects of Confirmation?

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The effects are: A full outpouring of the Holy Spirit into the soul.

A deepening of the graces given at Baptism.

7.    What is the history of the sacrament?

From the scriptures:

In the Acts of the Apostles, the Apostles, the successors to the bishops, laid hands on the new Christians and they received the Holy Spirit. (Acts 8:14-18)

In the early Church, according to St. Cyprian, Baptism and Confirmation were given at the same time, comprising a "double sacrament." This tradition was continued among the Eastern Rite churches. They were more widespread and rural and the Bishop of a diocese could not always get to the various parishes to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. This was also coupled with a high rate of infant mortality.

In the Western or Roman Rite, according to St. Hippolytus, the custom of a "double anointing" developed: the first anointing given by the priest at baptism, and the second anointing given by the Bishop at Confirmation. If an adult is baptized, there is a single anointing given at Confirmation, usually immediately following Baptism.

8.    What is the significance of chrism oil?

The sacred chrism is the oil used for anointing in the Sacraments of the Church. This oil is blessed at a solemn Chrism Mass celebrated shortly before Easter.

9.    What is the role of the sponsor?

The sponsor or godparent has a duty to assist you in learning and keeping your faith, in fulfilling the responsibilities of Confirmation and helping with your spiritual welfare.

10.. What is the significance of choosing a Confirmation name?

You become like your “name” saint. Whatever saint you choose, you will come under their patronage, and receive the graces of their particular charisms.
