We Celebrate the Eucharist

Family Guide

Based on text by Christiane Brusselmans and Brian A. Haggerty.

Published by Silver Burdett Ginn/RCL Benziger, Allen, TX

Dear Family,

The first time your child receives Jesus in the Eucharist is an event of great joy for your family and for the whole Christian community.

..."The Eucharist is the center and heart of Christian life for both the universal and local Church and for each Christian" (Sharing the Light of Faith, National Catechetical Directory for Catholics of the United States, 120).

Preparing children to share fully in an event of such importance calls for our best efforts. parents have a right and duty to be intimately involved in preparing their children for First Communion" (National Catechetical Directory, 122).

Suggested Guidelines for Family Participation:

  • Eucharistic preparation should be a step-by-step process
  • Eucharistic preparation should focus on what we do and what is done for us in the Eucharist.
  • Eucharistic preparation should take account of the children's ability to understand.
  • Eucharistic preparation should help children appreciate the relationship between the eucharistic celebration and the rest of their lives.

Eucharistic Themes in We Celebrate the Eucharist:

The Eucharist is About BELONGING

The Eucharist is About CELEBRATING
