Praying

Praying

There are many ways to communicate with God.

Practicing different ways of praying will help you feel more comfortable when you do pray.  You will be able to communicate with God at any time.

Stepping Stones to Prayer

Prayer is one way in which we respond to God's love and God's gift of faith.  We honor God through prayer, lifting up our hearts and minds in love.

You, Lord, are near to all who call upon you,
to all who call upon you in truth...

Psalm 145:18

Stepping Stones to Prayer

Use your own words.  You can talk to God aloud or silently.  Talk to God as you would talk to a friend.  Prayers can be as simple as "Help me, God." or "Thank you, Lord."

Use other people's words.  Pray common prayers like the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary.  You can also pray using the prayers we pray at Mass.  Reading the Bible is another good way to pray.

Use no words.  Sometimes prayer is listening quietly to God.  You can practice this kind of prayer by spending time outdoors in a favorite spot, by visiting the parish church, or by listening to quiet music.

Try new ways to pray.  Everyday, offer whatever you are doing as a gift to God.

Pray with others.  You can pray with family members in the morning, at mealtime, or at bedtime.  Pray with your friends in religion class.  Pray with the whole Church family at Mass and in celebrations of the other sacraments.

These small steps should help to lead you along your journey to a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God.
